New York mayor Eric Adams abandons the Democratic Party while looking for a second term.
Adams, who was a republican before becoming a democrat, officially announced his campaign to re -election to the town hall on Thursday in a video, saying that he planned to present himself as independent.
“Although I am always a democrat, I announce that I will give up the Democratic primary for the mayor and I directly call all New Yorkers as an independent candidate in the general elections,” said Adams in the video.
This decision, which comes less than 24 hours after a judge permanently rejected a case of federal corruption against the mayor, establishes what is likely to be a frantic and rapid race towards the general elections in November. The accusations were abandoned for the first time a few weeks in the second term of President Donald Trump in part because the case would hinder Adams’ ability to do his work as mayor, in particular in cooperation with the repression of Trump’s immigration, wrote the new interim vice-prosecutor of the Ministry of Justice.
Several Democrats are looking for the party’s appointment, former governor Andrew Cuomo currently leading in most polls.
The Democrat primary in New York, which is held in June, is considered the determining race before the November elections. The Democrats are more numerous than the Republicans by major margins of the city; Whoever wins the primary is considered the probable winner in the general elections. Michael Bloomberg, once and now a Democrat, has won mayor’s races in the most populous city in the country as an independent and republican, spending millions of his personal fortune to do so.
Faced with calls to withdraw from some from the Democratic Party, Adams remained largely from the daily campaign that his opponents are already making. He has broken several forums organized by numerous unions and other institutions in the city.
Adams is on the right track to submit the 3,750 signatures he will need by the end of May to obtain a place on the November bulletin, a campaign assistant told CNN.
The Adams campaign obtained 25,000 signatures for the democratic voting line, but said that his recent legal problems had prevented him from setting up an appropriate campaign, he said in the video that fell on Thursday.
“The dismissal of the false case against me has dragged on too long, which makes it impossible to set up a primary campaign when these false accusations have been held on me,” said Adams.
