The man who burned the Koran “ killed in Sweden ”

A man who sparked violent demonstrations after burning the Koran was shot in Sweden, according to local media.

Salwan Mamika, 38, was reportedly killed in an apartment in Södertälje, Stockholm, Wednesday evening.

The troubles broke out after Mr. Mamika set fire to a copy of the Sacred Islam book outside the Central Mosque of Stockholm in 2023.

Stockholm police said in a statement that five people had been arrested after a man in his forties had been shot down overnight.

Local media reported that Mr. Mamika had been live on social networks when he was shot.

Mr. Mamika, an Iraqi living in Sweden, was charged in August alongside “the agitation against an ethnic group” four times in the summer of 2023.

The verdict, which is expected to be returned on Thursday, was postponed after being confirmed that one of the accused had died, “said the district court of Stockholm.

Mr. Mamika has organized a series of anti-Islam demonstrations, arousing indignation in many Muslim majority countries.

The troubles took place twice at the Swedish Embassy of Baghdad, while the Swedish ambassador was expelled from the city in the middle of a diplomatic row.

The Swedish police had given Mr. Mamika the authorization of the demonstration in which he burned the sacred book, in accordance with the laws on the country’s freedom of expression.

The government then undertook to explore legal means to abolish the demonstrations which imply burning texts in certain circumstances.
