George Simion, leader of the AUR of the far right in Romania, in the country’s presidential race, called on Ukraine to compensate Bucharest for its military and humanitarian aid, reported the Romanian diffuser DIGI24 on May 8.
Simion, which won the first round of the presidential election of Romania on May 4 with almost 40% of the votes, reiterated that if it were elected, it would oppose any aid to Ukraine and changed the attention of Romania inward.
He developed his position as foreign policy as “neutrality, climbing and not providing weapons, but joining the policies of (American president Donald) Trump”.
“Ukraine needs us, we do not need Ukraine, so Ukraine must respect the national and religious rights of the Romanian half-millions living in Ukraine. And we certainly want compensation for the participation of Romania in the war effort so far,” Simion said during the Euronews debate.
He added that the form of compensation would be subject to future negotiations.
“But for the patriotic system given by (former Romanian president) Klaus Iohannis as national betrayal and other expenses that the Romanians have made of their own pockets, we should get something in return,” he said.
The American manufacturing air defense system, recognized for its precision in the interception of aircraft, cruises and ballistic missiles, was essential in the armor of Ukrainian cities of Russian strikes. Ukraine received a Patriotic Bucharest system in October 2024.
The presidential election will switch to runoff on May 18.
The current election follows the cancellation of the first initial round in November 2024, which the Constitutional Court of Romania invalidated on proof of the manipulation of social media and foreign interference.
This round had been won by populist Calin Georgescu, who openly promoted conspiracy theories and supported Russia, calling Ukraine a “fictitious state” and predicting its score as “inevitable”.
Romania, a member of NATO limiting Ukraine, has signed a bilateral security agreement with kyiv, supported by sanctions against Russia and facilitates the export of Ukrainian cereals in the midst of Russian threats to the Black Sea.
