“It doesn’t look good,” said manager Brian Snitker after the match.
The brave people separated Thursday at Citizens Bank Park. They lost the first match, 5-4, before blowing the phillies in the second match, 9-3. Atlanta lost two of the three here against a team of Phillies who did not have the superstar Bryce Harper.
In this third round of the first game, Smith-Shawver was drilled in the Achilles tendon in his right foot by a return from Bryson Stott’s bat. He jumped after that and assistant sports coach Jeff Stevenson and Snitker came out checking it. After a few warm -up throws, Stevenson and Snitker returned to the canoe.
Smith-Shawver then faced Trea Turner. Since the canoe, it seemed that Spencer Strider noticed that something was wrong with the arm of Smith-Shawver after the first launch in Turner. Strider went to Snitker and launched Rick Kranitz and urged them to eliminate Smith-Shawver. Then Strider drew the attention of Smith-Shawver, and the mound, Smith-Shawver signaled that he was injured.
It was then that Stevenson and Snitker returned to the mound to remove Smith-Shawver-after Turner flew to the warning track after him after the fourth Smith-Shawver throw. The television cameras caught Smith-Shawver saying that he felt something “pop” when he spoke to the group around him on the mound.
“Yeah, he did it,” said Snitker. “He said,” I felt it had on a terrain in Turner. “I did not know if he meant his elbow or I thought that his Achilles or his foot may be bothering him.
The first Smith-Shawver throw to Turner was a quick bullet of 95.9 mi / h. Then he launched a fast 94.7 -h / h ball. Two throws later, he launched a quick bullet of 94.2 mi / h. His speed had fallen earlier in the exit, when he launched 10 fast balls out of 98 mph.
Sometimes pitcies can compensate for another injury, which causes disturbances in the kinetic chain and puts more stress on the arm. When asked if something like it had happened, Snitker did not believe it. He thought it was an isolated incident with the elbow.
“No, I think that is only one of them,” said Snitker. “I don’t think it has something to do with that. I think it was just something that was a by-product of (how) his speed was really, really good. I don’t think it’s that. I think it was just something that was probably intended to happen. ”
Had Smith-Shawver treated arms or greenhouse pain this season?
“No. Not that I know, no,” said Snitker. “This is generally what is happening: a guy will launch a field and there is no warning or something like that, then he feels something. This is why we have to have him checked and see what’s going on.”
But doesn’t that look good?
“I don’t think you hear these words – when they describe the pains and” I felt something pop “that is generally not really good,” said Snitker. “But we have to look at him first.”
The brave will know more Friday after the MRI of Smith-Shawver. If he had effectively torn his ulnar collateral ligament, he would need Tommy John surgery or the internal splint procedure. The first needs 12 to 18 months of rehabilitation, and the second takes about a year for the launchers to return. Smith-Shawver has not yet suffered Tommy John surgery in his young career.
It would be a great disappointment if the injury was serious, as it was feared.
After granting two points – both on a home run – more than 2 2/3 innings Thursday, Smith -Shawver has an MPM of 3.86. It was a promising year for the 22-year-old flame thrower. Before Thursday, he had an MPM of 3.21 in his last five departures, one of which he took a sure blow in the eighth round against the Reds.
With Strider sidelined earlier in the season and Reynaldo Lópe always on the injured list, the emergence of Smith -Shawver – which was devoted to the validation of its highest prospect status – was encouraging for the Braves. The club thought Smith-Shawver was developing well and could continue as a rotation piece. The evidence there: when Strider returned from a strain of the hamstrings, the braves chose an option of Bryce Elder and to keep the blacksmith in their rotation.
And Thursday, Smith-Shawver may have suffered an injury at the end of the season.
“It stinks,” said receiver Sean Murphy. “He launched the ball so well. He launched awkward terrain and rocked his arm. It was a little weird. You could just say that something was there.”
Murphy remembers Smith-Shawver saying he was going well after the return hit his foot. “So, generally when the launchers tell you, they are serious,” added Murphy. “They feel it when something hurts.” Smith-Shawver continued to launch, then needed to get out of the match.
“He said something in his arm was not feeling well,” said Murphy. “I don’t know what it’s now.”
In the second match, Chris Sale shot six -sleeves aimlessly – reducing his ERA to 3.06 – to stabilize things while Atlanta’s attack has pounded the pitch of Philadelphia. The sale has also accomplished something itself.
The sale earned its 2,500th stick withdraws to end its exit. The sale is the fastest launcher at 2,500 stick withdrawals per sleeves presented in the history of the MLB, which does it in 2,026 sleeves. (Randy Johnson, who previously held the record, made it in 2,107 2/3 of executives.)
“I appreciate it,” said dirty about accomplishment. “I am not much for the figures, but I really appreciate it. For me, it is the satisfaction of all the people who brought me to this point. Just very grateful for all my coaches, all my teammates, sensors and coaches – Lord knows that I spent a lot of time with them.
Addition of Snitker: “It’s incredible what he does. I mean, he does stuff from the fame of fame. It seems that we throw every ball and all these kinds of things. Yeeah, it’s special. This guy is probably a big baseball fan that everyone you know.”
Growing up, the idolated sale Johnson. And that evening, he jumped in front of him on the list of the fastest launchers to reach this brand.
Let it sink.
“It goes away,” said Snitker. “The guy behind him is pretty good. No, it’s incredible what he does. He does historical things, obviously. I could not be happier for the person – just the professional, the competitor, the teammate. For him too, it is a name on the front of the ball club.”
The brave scored six points of the phenomenon Ace Zack Wheeler. In two games against Wheeler this season, the Braves scored 11 points. Wheeler only granted 14 points combined in his 10 other departures, and entered a sequence of three consecutive departures on Thursday.
The Braves ended the day on a high note. However, they could have lost a launcher leaving for the year.
Everyone hopes the best.
But for the moment, hope may not be enough.
“It’s a shame,” said Snitker. “I hope it’s not huge, but I don’t know – these things are generally never that.”
