The latest update on ‘3 Body Problem’ season 2

Netflix has been very strange about what’s happening with 3 Body Problem, its extremely expensive sci-fi series based on the famous books. They recently said they had been given the green light for “additional episodes” and the creators said they were happy to be able to “finish their story,” but after previously saying they needed four seasons to tell everything, it was more than strange that no one had even said it. the words “season 2” during this announcement.

Perhaps they were figuring out exactly how this was all going to play out, but now we have our final answer as to what’s going on. 3 Body Problem will have three seasons in total on Netflix, so season 2 and season 3 are definitely coming.

“We included a lot of what we loved about the (novels) in Season 1, but the vast majority of the reasons we wanted to do this show are in Season 2,” Weiss said during a panel at the Netflix FYSEE space. “We always wanted to get to the last page of the third book, and it’s really exciting for us to be able to do just that.”

Three seasons, three books, but there will be no fourth season to extend this last, very large-scale book. We don’t have an episode order for these two seasons, but if they mirror the first, they will be eight episodes long.

This represents a huge financial commitment to the series, which did well, but didn’t exactly land in Netflix’s all-time viewership rankings. At the reported price of $20 million per episode, Netflix has already spent $160 million on the series, and two more seasons at that price would add up to $480 million, or nearly half a billion dollars. But the wild places the next two books will go, which would require a lot more visual effects, could push those costs even higher.

Yet, as I said before, Netflix was between a rock and a hard place with this series. If you greenlight season 2, you to have to finish the series and not just leave the trilogy hanging in Netflix’s graveyard of unfinished and canceled series. It’s too big a project for that. And the other complicating factor is that this is the first series to come out of Netflix’s high-profile and expensive overall deal with Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, and they wouldn’t not seriously damage this relationship by removing a huge show like this. I spent years doing this. So even if viewers don’t justify spending $480 million on the series, they can view it as an investment.

As a spectator, I am delighted. I enjoyed season 1 and love the book series, so I’m more than happy for Netflix to spend any amount of money to complete the adaptation. From a business perspective this doesn’t sound great, but for subscribers? They need to do more things like this and finish the series they started in order to have clear endings. In this case, they had almost no choice given the situation they found themselves in.
