Joel and Ellie will be riding again this spring. HBO 8-time Emmy winner and 24-time Emmy nominee The last of us will return for season 2 in April, Neil Druckmann, video game co-creator and showrunner of the series, revealed Monday during a press conference at the CES technology conference in Las Vegas.
Druckmann writes and produces The last of us series with Craig Mazin (Chernobyl). The news is accompanied by a new teaser, which provides a glimpse of key sequences from the game recreated in live-action.
“It’s OK if you have a code like me,” Kaitlyn Dever (Smart book, Nobody will save you) said in her debut as Abby, a mysterious but fairly central (and controversial) character in the events that unfold. “There are certain things that everyone recognizes as false.”
The drama, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, will begin adapting events from the 2020s The Last of Us Part IIwhich picks up a few years later where Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) are now living comfortably in Jackson Township with Joel’s brother, Tommy (Gabriel Luna), and Tommy’s wife, Maria (Rutina Wesley). When a traumatic event leaves the community in ruins, Ellie makes it her mission to bring those responsible to justice.
Those who have enjoyed playing the second installment of the video game in recent years will be very familiar with the heartbreaking stories to come, which are contributing to the hype around Season 2. They will recognize some of the key sequences seen in the new teaser. These include Abby walking down a hallway toward the red light at the exit sign, with a Firefly pendant hanging from her neck and the alarms blaring; a certain someone grabbing a sickle in the woods and dragging the blade toward his overpowered target; Ellie de Ramsey slow dances with a girl, Isabela Merced (Superman, Extraterrestrial: Romulus) in the role of Dina, Jackson’s love interest; Ellie and Dina fight to survive on an abandoned subway car; and the later solo shot of Ellie, gun raised, walking toward the camera while enveloped in the glow of emergency signs.

There is also awards buzz surrounding the show. The first season earned acting nominations for Pascal and Ramsey, as well as guest stars Anna Torv, Melanie Lynskey, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Montreal Woodard and Murray Bartlett. Meanwhile, guest stars Nick Offerman and Storm Reid walked away from Emmy night with wins in their respective categories.
The season 2 cast will introduce members of Abby’s team of survivors: Owen (Spencer Lord), Mel (Ariela Barer), Nora (Tati Gabrielle), and Manny (Danny Ramirez).
In addition to Dina de Merced, others coming into Joel and Ellie’s orbit in Jackson Township are Young Mazino (Beef) as Jesse, Ellie’s close friend and Dina’s ex; and Catherine O’Hara (Beetle juice Beetle juice) guest stars as Joel’s therapist, who appears to help him unpack the trauma of what he endured in season 1.
Friend of HBO Jeffrey Wright (Western world) will also appear as the same character he played in the Part two video game, Isaac, described as “the quiet and powerful leader of a great militia who sought freedom but instead became mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.”
