“The Last of Us” was renewed by HBO for a third season, before the premiere of season 2 on April 13.
While the first season adapted the famous Sony PlayStation 2013 game of the same title, the sequel to the game, “The Last of Us Part II” from the 2020s, is so massive that the creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have always planned to divide its events into several seasons. In an interview Variety Towards season 2 of seven episodes, Mazin said he thought that the series had “one or two more seasons” before reaching the end of “Part II”.
“It becomes more difficult to do, because each episode becomes big,” he said. “You don’t want to wait four years for a finish of 17 episodes, or anything.”
In another statement with the renewal announcement, Mazin said: “We approached season 2 in order to create something we could be proud of. The final results even exceeded our most ambitious objectives, thanks to our continuous collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our distribution and our unrivaled crew. ”
Located in a post-apocalyptic world decimated by a fungal pandemic which transforms people infected into zombies, “The Last of Us”, which was presented in 2023, was among the best rated dramatic series in the history of HBO during its first season, winning 24 nominations of Primetime Emmy Awards. Stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey come back for season 2, with Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley. The new members of the distribution include Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barrer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez, Jeffrey Wright, Catherine O’hara, Joe Pantoliano, Alanna Ubach, Ben Ahlers, Hettienne Park, Robert John Burke and Noah Lambale.
“Seeing” The Last of Us “brought to life so nicely and faithfully was a strong career moment for me, and I am grateful for enthusiastic and crushing fans,” said Druckmann, who was the writer and creative director of the games. “A large part of this success is thanks to my partner in Crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO and our PlayStation Productions team.”
With the Mazin and Druckmann showrunners, Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Evan Wells are executive producers. Halley Gross is a co-executive writer and co-producer.
