For the first time in history, all team sports will have at least the same number of female teams as the male teams, with a water polo adding two female teams, which now makes 12 women’s teams and 12 men.
Football, with 16 female teams, will present more female teams than male (12).
Gender equality was a key consideration when the athlete quota and the number of events. In the initial sports program, with 10,500 athletes, the number of female athletes is 5,333 and the number of male athletes 5,167. Additional sports add 322 female athletes and 376 male athletes. In addition, six mixed events were added to the event program. Out of 351 events, there are 161 female events, 165 male events and 25 mixed events.
A powerful platform for female athletes
- Football: for the first time in Olympic history, more female teams (16) that men (12) will participate.
- Boxing: An additional women’s weight category ensures complete gender parity between events, while maintaining an equal number of athlete quotas for men and women, as was the case in Paris 2024.
- Aquatic Polo: Two additional female teams will ensure complete gender parity in the athlete quota and the number of teams.
- Extended mixed events: archery, athletics (mixed 4x100m relay), golf, gymnastics, coastal beach sprint of Aviron and table tennis will all see the inclusion of a new mixed team event.
New medal and innovation opportunities
- Swimming: events of 50 meters rear, butterfly and brewing for men and women will bring a high -speed excitation to the pool of the Inglewood stadium.
- Airon: The female solo (CW1X), the male solo (CM1X) and the mixed gnulls (CX2X) will start at Coastal Beach Sprint.
- Sports climbing: Rock and lead events will now be disputed as separate medal events, creating new steps for athletes to shine.
- Basketball 3×3: Having made its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with eight teams each for men and women, the event expanded to include 12 teams per sex.

Twenty-four out of 31 Olympic international federations had made a change request in their program of events at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In total, 46 new events were requested (16 men / 17 mixed women), six of whom were potentially replacing existing events, which makes a total of 40 additional events requested. A total of 772 additional quota places were requested for the initial sport and event program of 10,500 athletes (339 men / 433 women).
The principles of the event program
The Events program for La28 was developed on the basis of requests submitted by international sports federations in the IOC. The decision of the IOC EB followed the recommendation of the Olympic Program Commission and the approved principles in 2023, which specified that the games should be equal of gender, attractive worldwide, aware of costs and complexity and focused on the athlete.

With the inclusion of boxing, approved by the IOC session in March 2025, the La28 sports program is made up of 31 sports, with five additional sports offered by the organizing committee and approved by the IOC in 2023.
