“ We could have provided it better than his mother ”

A South African court condemned Rac which “Kelly” Smith to life for life yesterday, May 29. She was found guilty of traffic by her six -year -old daughter, Joshlin Smith, who has disappeared for more than a year.

The court also condemned Smith’s boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis, and their friend, Steveno Van Rhyn, for having removed and sold Joshlin in February 2024. The prosecutors declared that Smith had accepted 20,000 rands (around £ 800) of a traditional healer, known as the Sangoma, in exchange for the child.

During the determination of the sentence, judge Nathan Erasmus made a statement, expressing not only the sorrow on the disappearance of Joshlin, but also the concerns about the systemic failures which may have contributed to it. “The evidence indicated that Miss Smith, in particular, needed social services for an extended period,” he said, According to Jacaranda FM. “And I wonder, when her grandmother complained in 2016 at the Ministry of Social Development for a protection order. What access has she (Kelly) when she asked for her support from the justice system? We failed. “

Smith had long -term drug addiction, unstable accommodation and a history of negligence, as in court said. The report of a social worker described his life as “in chaos”. And she had not been able to provide consistent and safe care for Joshlin from the start.

Joshlin had briefly been in the care of a family friend, Natasha Andrews, who hoped to adopt him. “We could have provided her better than his mother,” Andrews told court. She explained that the plan had fallen due to a lack of consent.

The police have committed to continuing their research. According to The BBC, the Cape Western police commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, told local media: “We will not rest until we find (what happened to Joshlin. We continue to look for day and night.”
