The Ministry of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into Andrew Mr. Cuomo, a favorite in the New York town hall race after the Republicans accused him of lying to the Congress on the decisions he took during the coronavirus pandemic as governor, according to two familiar people with the issue.
The investigation started about a month ago by the American prosecutor’s office in Washington, comes after senior officials from the Ministry of Justice in February demanded the rejection of an indictment from the current city mayor, Eric Adams, on corruption accusations.
This puts the Trump administration in the unusual position of having ended a criminal affair against the head of the largest city in the country and opened its chief rival of a few months. Mr. Adams presents himself to re -election as an independent, and Mr. Cuomo directs the democratic primary domain in the polls.
The existence of the investigation is sure to further fuel criticism that President Trump and his administration exercise the Ministry of Justice as Gourdin to reach political ends and punish his enemies received.
Trump regularly calls for criminal surveys of political enemies and people who have crossed him, often according to what legal experts say they are fragile allegations of reprehensible acts. His people appointed to the Ministry of Justice have increasingly pointed out a desire to use their investigation and prosecution powers to exercise the wishes of Mr. Trump.
The familiar people with the details of the investigation into Mr. Cuomo spoke under the guise of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss it. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice and an FBI spokesperson refused to comment, citing a general policy not to confirm or refuse investigations.
