US district district judge Beryl Howell, in a scathing decision on Friday, canceled President Donald Trump’s executive part of Perkins Coie, declaring his effort to target the large unconstitutional law firm.
Howll’s summary judgment decision fully blocks the executive decree 14230, entitled “Adjusting the risks of Perkins Coie LLP”, to take effect. This is the first decision of this type in the myriad of legal challenges under Trump orders targeting various large law firms.
The federal government may appeal the decision, in which case the procedure will be heard before the Court of Appeal. Any later appeal would be heard by the Supreme Court.
A spokesperson for Perkins Coie told Business Insider in a statement that the company was satisfied with the judge’s decision.
“This decision affirms the basic constitutional freedoms that all Americans are expensive, including freedom of expression, regular procedure and the right to select advice without fear of reprisals,” the statement said. “As we go forward, we remain guided by the same commitments that have first forced us to raise this challenge: to protect our business, to safeguard the interests of our customers and to respect the rule of law.”
Affairs involving other companies – including Jenner & Block and Wilmerhale – have pending requests to reject and have obtained temporary ban prescriptions that partially block the implementation orders.
