A jewelry thief in Florida slipped more than $ 700,000 in earrings last week, then swallowed the proof hours Before being arrested for “what is in my stomach,” officials said on Wednesday.
Jaythan Gilder, 32, told Tiffany & Co. employees in the Millenia shopping center around 1:45 p.m. on February 26 that he was a representative of an Orlando Magic basketball player before being taken to a VIP room and showed several high-end jewelry, according to a written arrest by VIP Aaron Goss.
Gilder received a pair of diamond earrings of 4.86 carats worth $ 160,000, a pair of diamond earrings of 8.19 carats worth $ 609,000 and a diamond ring of 5.61 carats worth $ 587,000, said the court document. He then caught the three jewelry and fought with the employees before dropping the ring and fleeing the store, according to GOSS.
Surveillance cameras for shopping centers have captured gilder images leaving in a blue Mitsubishi Outlander that the detectives have retraced a Houston rent-in-wing, the Affidavit said. The Florida Highway Patrol would then have spotted Gilder and this SUV on Interstate 10 in Tallahassee at 7:55 p.m., about 300 miles northwest of Orlando and “take the fastest road” in Texas.
“While he was placed in police custody, Gilder swallowed several articles,” said the Affidavit.
An analysis of the suspect, taken in Washington County prison, found “foreign objects in his stomach,” wrote Goss.
“These foreign objects are suspected of being the Tiffany & Co. Co. earrings taken in the flight but will have to be collected … After their passage in the Gilder system,” said the Affidavit.
During his prison, Gilder “spontaneously asked the staff” am I accused of what is in my stomach? “” Goss wrote.
While he was in the Patrol car of the FHP, a striking soldier heard Gilder say: “I should have thrown them out the window,” said police.
An Orlando police spokesman refused to comment on Wednesday when NBC News asked if the stolen earrings had been recovered.
The police have “no additional information to share for the moment,” said the representative of the department.
The clothes that Gilder had for the flight was found in the SUV after his arrest, the police said. He had “a piece of white gauze on his nose” at the store and the bandage was found in the Outlander, the police said.
Gilder was sentenced to suspicion of large flight and theft with a mask and was still in detention in Orange County on Wednesday.
The gauze on Gilder’s face did not cover any injury, which means that the bandage was supposed to “disguise its true face / identity”, leading to the charge “flying with a mask,” said the police.
He was not immediately clear if he had hired a lawyer or had an attributed. He succeeded “a similar flight” in a Tiffany & Co. in 2022 in the Woodlands, Texas, and he “48 distinct mandates from Colorado”, according to a police press release.
