Isis claimed two attacks on Syrian security forces – the first since the transitional government under the former jihadist Ahmed Al-Sharaa took office.
The terrorist group, also known as the Islamic State, said that it had killed and injured seven members of “the apostate Syrian regime“With an explosive device that has been exploded on a road in southern Syria. He said the attack took place in the distant desert zone of Talul Al Safa in the Southern Syria Province in Suwayda.
A military source from the Suwayda region told CNN that a free Syrian army recognition unit had been caught in ambush on Wednesday while following the movements of the Islamic State in the region. A fighter had been killed and three injured.
The units of the free Syrian army are supported by the US military in what is called the Al Tanf deconfliction zone near the borders with Jordan and Egypt, where the United States has a small outpost.
The source added that the Talul Al Safa region is “an extremely robust and dangerous area, because ISIS has been operating its land for a long time”.
The Islamic State has lost almost the entire territory it controlled in Syria by the end of 2017, but set foot in the vast central desert of Syria. Isis won another attack in the same area several days ago.
CNN contacted the government in Damascus to comment. Last week, the Syrian Interior Ministry said that the security forces operating in an area not far from the place where the attacks had taken place had seized “a certain number of improvised explosive devices (IED), as well as weapons” in places belonging to a terrorist cell affiliated with the Islamic State.
The Washington DC Institute for War Study says that the group probably maintained cells in southern Syria despite not having carried out attacks there for at least two years.
The United States and other Western governments have urged the new Syrian government to prevent an Islamic State resurgence and other terrorist groups on Syrian soil. But the government has struggled to extend its authority to Suwayda, where there were clashes between the Druze and Sunnis groups.
