Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (AP) – The Iranian Foreign Minister said on Tuesday that he would meet the American envoy Steve Witkoff to Oman for the first negotiations under the Trump administration seeking to stop the rapidly progress nuclear program in Tehran while tensions remain high in the Middle East.
Addressing the Iranian state television in Algeria, Abbas Araghchi maintained that the talks would be indirect, probably with omani mediators who closed between the parties. US President Donald Trump, announcing negotiations on Monday, described them as direct talks.
Years of indirect talks within the framework of the Biden administration have not achieved any success, because Tehran now enriches uranium up to 60% of purity – a technical step far from the quality of weapons. The United States and Israel have threatened Iran with military attacks against the program, while Tehran officials are increasingly warning that they could potentially pursue a nuclear bomb.
“Our main objective in talks is to naturally restore the rights of people as well as to raise sanctions, and if the other side has a real will, this is achievable, and it has nothing to do with the method, direct or indirect,” said Araghchi. “For the moment, indirect is our preference. And we have no plan to modify it to direct. “
Araghchi’s comments have left the space so that Iran has potentially direct talks with the Americans. Such talks are not known since the Obama administration.
There was no immediate recognition of the United States that Witkoff would direct the American delegation.
After Trump’s comments on talks have become public, Iran’s difficulty in difficulty has shown new signs of life. His rial currency, which reached a record hollow of more than a million Rials in the dollar, rebounded on Tuesday at 990,000 Rials. The Teheran Stock Exchange has increased 2% separately on news.
The Iranian economy was seriously affected by international sanctions, in particular after Trump unilaterally withdrawn America from the Teheran Nuclear Agreement with the global powers in 2018. At the time of the 2015 agreement, which saw Iran considerably limit its enrichment and the storage of uranium in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions, the Rial was negotiated at 32,000 to 32,000 to 32,000 to 32,000 to 32,000.
Economic upheavals have evaporated public savings, pushing the Iranians medium to keep hard currencies, gold, cars and other tangible wealth. Others continue cryptocurrencies or fall into rich rich patterns.
Negotiations on Saturday come after Trump wrote to the supreme chief of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, trying to relaunch the direct talks between Tehran and Washington. Khamenei became hard on Trump in February and warned the talks “are not intelligent, wise or honorable” with his administration.
Meanwhile, Trump continues an intense air campaign targeting the Houthi rebels supported by Iran in Yemen, the last force in the self-written “resistance axis” of Tehran, capable of attacking Israel after other militant groups were seriously weakened by Israel during his war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
There had been an intense anger towards Trump of Iran’s theocracy, in particular on his decision to launch a drone strike who killed the Iranian general, the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in 2020. US officials declared that Trump had faced threats of assassination of Iran before the presidential election of 2024.
But Iran may take a different path now. The Iranian Journal DUR KAYHAN published on Saturday an informed article: “Trump will have died of several bullets in his empty head in revenge for the blood of Martyr Soleimani.” A day later, the press supervisory board in the Iranian and Islamic Ministry of Culture issued a daily warning on the article, which the newspaper later described as a satire.
Asked about Trump’s mention of direct talks provided between the United States and Iran, the spokesman for Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, said that Moscow welcomed them, adding that “we argue the issue of the Iranian nuclear file by political and diplomatic means”.
Peskov added during a conference call with journalists: “We are aware that certain contacts, direct and indirect, are planned in Oman and that we can only welcome them because they could lead to the de -escalation of tensions around Iran.” His remarks come when Trump tries to negotiate a separate peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, talks that also occurred in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia.
An expert level meeting among representatives of Russia, China and Iran was to take place Tuesday in Moscow to discuss the Iranian nuclear program.
