The Indonesian animated feature film “Jumbo” broke the local box office records, becoming the most profitable Indonesian animated film of all time after reaching 1 million admissions in just seven days after its first theatrical.
The production of Visinema Studios, which opened its doors on March 31, exceeded the previous record held by “If Juki the film: Panitia Hari Akhir” (2017), which attracted 642,312 admissions and remained undefeated for eight years.
The film follows Don, a young boy often underestimated by his peers who takes place to play in a show of talents with a play inspired by a book of precious fairy tale left by his late parents. His plans are disturbed when an intimidator steals the book, and unexpectedly puts on a mysterious young child who is looking for help to find his parents.
“These figures are not only ticket sales. They represent the love, hope and confidence of people for our own local stories,” said Anggia Kharisma, producer of “Jumbo”. “Seeing this kind of sincere answer from the Indonesian public makes each challenge that we have faced in the past five years is incredibly significant.”
The success of the film is particularly remarkable in a market where horror films dominate more than 50% of national theatrical versions. “Jumbo” managed to thrive with his family narration focused on the themes of heat, hope and connection.
“Jumbo” also generated substantial organic support on social networks, with “Jumbo free buzzers” creating memes and viral messages that have maintained the film’s trend on X and Tiktok for days.
After its domestic success, the film is developing internationally from June with theatrical outings in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darustam. The animated, managed and written function by Ryan Adriandhy, will also be projected in certain parts of Asia and Europe, notably Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States and several Central Asian countries.
The film represents a significant production for the Indonesian animation industry, having been created through a five -year collaboration effort involving more than 420 Indonesian animators and creators.
Visinema Group, founded in 2008 by the Indonesian filmmaker Angga Dwimas Sasongko, continues to rely on his portfolio of successful intellectual properties which include “Nussa”, “Mencuri Raden Saleh” and “Keluarga Cemara”.
