Two of the largest fires – the Eaton Fire in Altadena and Pasadena, and the coastal Palisades Fire – remain largely uncontained ahead of the onset of windier conditions.

Aerial firefighters dropped fire retardants on the mountains, painting the peaks with red lines. Crews from other states, Mexico and Canada joined the firefighting efforts.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said more than 14,000 people were involved in efforts to control the fires.

We take a look at the most dramatic and terrifying photos from California’s wildfire devastation.
