In a state in which the campaign season can feel all year round, Wisconsin voters have become on Tuesday in the polls, breaking their ballots in a race of nearly $ 100 million for the control of the Supreme Court of the State.
While dozens of voters flowed in and outside a Lutheran church in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, they said that much more than the names of the candidates on the ballot. There was a local referendum closely watched to pump more money in the Racine County public schools, one of the many similar questions asked to voters of state communities. There was a measure to consecrate a law on the identification of voters in the constitution of the State.
And then there was Elon Musk, the technological billionaire and the White House advisor who paid millions in the race for advertisements and solicitation. Mr. Musk, who acquired a radical authority over the government through President Trump, has become a deeply polarizing figure among the Wisconsinites – which many said they would like to stay outside their business.
“Does my face say everything?” said Lydia Vela, 54, a banker who threw to the sound by the name of Mr. Musk. “He scares.”
Ms. Vela, a democrat, said that she hoped that a victory for judge Susan Crawford, the candidate for the Supreme Court of the Liberal State, on the conservative competitor, Brad Schimel, would send a message that billionaires like Mr. Musk should not play a role in local politics.
Elections officials said the early voting rate had exceeded 600,000 votes, suggesting that the total participation rate could exceed two million. About 1.8 million people voted in the Supreme Court of the State in 2023.
