Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin underscored the “importance of maintaining communication channels” in the context of the conflict in Ukraine on October 21 during a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu, according to the States Department of Defense. -United.
The last conversation between Sergei Shoigu and Lloyd Austin dated back to May 13, a few days before a telephone conversation between the chief of the Russian general staff, Valery Guerassimov, and his American counterpart, Mark Milley, on May 19.
The Pentagon did not give further details of their conversation, but the Russian Ministry of Defense had specified earlier that the two men had discussed “several current issues of international security, including the situation in Ukraine”.

The American official also exchanged with the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Oleksiï Reznikov, reiterating “the unwavering commitment of the United States to support the capacity of Ukraine to counter the aggression of Russia”. Lloyd Austin also underlined “the support of the international community” for Ukraine, and in particular its “ability to defend itself in the future”.
With 65 billion dollars in aid approved by the American Congress since the start of the Russian “special military operation”, the United States is by far the first and main financial and military sponsor of the Ukrainian authorities.
The Russian authorities have repeatedly warned against Western arms deliveries to kyiv, explaining that they have the effect of prolonging hostilities and render their authors “parties to the conflict” in Ukraine.
