- I moved to Portugal 11 years ago and married a tourist guide.
- We have traveled throughout the country together and have seen places tourists often neglect.
- I think Monsanto looks like a fairy tale, and I love Architecture in Tomar.
Eleven years ago, I gave myself up for Portugal with a small suitcase. I thought I would stay a month or two, but once I settled in my little Airbnb in the old town of Alfama de Lisbon, I felt at home and happier than ever.
A few weeks later, I joined a walking visit to get to know the city better. I became a friend with the guide, a young Portuguese named Rafael, and we fell in love and we got married a few years later.
Since then, we have traveled a lot in the country together. Here are five of my favorite places he took me to Portugal that tourists often neglect.
Monsanto feels like a fantastic novel that comes to life.
Tania Braukamper
Imagine a village on a steep rocky hill where stone houses are nestled between huge rocks – it’s Monsanto, located near the Spanish border.
When I visited, I felt like I entered a fantastic novel, so it’s easy to see why games of “House of the Dragon” were filmed here.
The village is home to fantastic hiking trails, so I recommend bringing walking shoes to admire the breathtaking view. I saw one of the most breathtaking sun lifes in my life here, which was worth waking up early.
In Sabueiro, you will share the mountain roads with goats.
Tania Braukamper
Sabueiro is a small village at the top of the mountain range of Serra Da Estrela. We spent a week here and I loved it.
The stream was clear and I liked to hear jangling bells while the herds of goat passed in front of me on the trails. The inhabitants were also very friendly and served as cooked goat cheese and other regional specialties in rustic restaurants.
Together, there is something in this city that makes you want to slow down and breathe wild flowers.
Amarante has more to offer than original pastries.
Tania Braukamper
The city of Amarante is located about 40 miles inside Porto lands, and the first time I visited, the penis decorations floated above the streets (yes, you read correctly).
The street stands also sold pastries in a phallic form to passers -by to bring them luck in love while veneration floats of São Gonçalo (Saint Gonzalo) have derived.
The celebration was part of the São Gonçalo festival, a dynamic mixture of pagan and Catholic influences, fireworks and drums that I absolutely loved. The festival takes place every year the first weekend in June.
That said, I also returned to Amarante outside the festival, and I think that the city otherwise quiet deserves a visit at any time of the year.
Tomar is imbued with the history of the Templars.
Tania Braukamper
Tomar is a charming city located about 90 miles northeast of Lisbon. It was founded in the 12th century by the Templars, a Catholic military order.
The centerpiece of the city is the imposing convent of Christ, which was founded in 1160 and located in the castle of Tomar.
The two sites are open for visits and filled with complex architecture, layers of symbolism and a palpable sense of history that makes me want to study each stone sculpture.
You can also walk along the castle walls to have a view to the surrounding bird. Even after several visits, I continue to find something new to explore.
The sanctuary of Panóias reveals strange Roman rituals.
Tania Braukamper
I am attracted to strange and slightly strange places, so I really appreciated my visit to the sanctuary of Panóias in Vale de Nogueiras. The site is dedicated to Serapis, the Greco-Egyptian god of hell, and dates back to the end of the 2nd or the beginning of the 3rd century AD.
Despite the lack of infrastructure or signaling (which only adds to its mystery, in my opinion), it offers a fascinating overview of ancient rituals. The sanctuary presents human size cavities carved in a granite outcrop, as well as inscriptions in Latin and Greek.
In my opinion, few places bring you so close to the darkest parts of the ancient world like this.
