Cleveland, Ohio – Ben Lively and Jhonkensy Noel struck early and Jose Ramirez and Angel Martinez struck late while the Guardians survived twins and two rainy delays on Thursday at Progressive Field.
The quartet led the Guardians to a victory of 4-3 in 10 rounds on the progressive field in a match which was delayed by more than two hours by the rain. The victory gave the Guardians a 6-4 file on their longest house of the season.
After the Twins took an advance of 3-2 in the 10th on a sacrificial fly by Johan Bride, the Guardians struck for two points at the end of the 10th to win it. Ramirez rolled in the Steven Kwan automatic runner with a simple to equalize the score and the pinch of the Martinez pinching led to Ramirez with the winning race in one right.
Ramirez stole second to put himself in the score position. It was the 250th theft of his career, making him the only player in the history of the club with 250 interceptions and 250 (260) circuits.
The twins intentionally traveled Kyle Manzardo to face the striking Martinez. He finished the match with a change of 0-2 by Justin Topa (1-2) in the right field.
“They intentionally walked Manzardo because they might not think I was ready,” said Martinez. “But I was ready.”
Lively launched 5 2/3-sleeves aimlessly and Christmas struck a 450-foot circuit to put Cleveland to an advance at the start of 2-0.
