THE GIFT | West Bend News

A penny for your thoughts By: Nancy Whitaker

I was always told that “pride goes before a fall”. I’m not much of a braggart, but in this column I’m proud and want to talk about The West Bend News and the column I wrote a few weeks ago about Little House on the Prairie is 50 years old.

As a Little House TV watcher and book reader, I was thrilled to hear about the remaining cast members reuniting.

The article that is my baby “Penny for Your Thoughts” was written about a month ago and talked about the different celebrations in the United States where you can meet the cast, visit Mr. Olsen’s store and be part of this celebration of the Little House.

One day a few weeks ago, Angel from West Bend called me and said, “We have a package here for you.

Of course, I asked, “Who is this from?” “What is this?” I told Angel to go ahead and open it because I was curious.

After opening the package, Angel said “It’s a book by Dean Butler” (Dean played Almanzo Wilder in the TV series.

Those responsible for the book and those in charge of the Little House celebration have read the West Bend News and Penny For Your Thoughts and I believe the book is from California. All of you readers should be impressed by how far this Antwerp newspaper has come.

Congratulations to The West Bend News and thanks to the Steiners who publish the paper. This newspaper is aimed at people across the United States.

Many thanks also to the staff and Mr. Dean Butler for sending me this wonderful book.

By the way, the book isn’t coming out until the end of June, so I guess I got it “hot off the press.”

We never know where or what will happen in our lives, but thank you to all the Little House cast, viewers, and book readers.

May these 50 years of celebration bring lots of people, laughter and memories.

I would love to go to one of the Little House meetings, but I’m not much of a traveler. But if you go, I’ll give you a penny for your thoughts. Well, I have a cold tea, my glasses and I read a little more of this gift that is a book.
