The geomagnetic storm could make the northern lights visible to Chicago on Sunday evening

Northern lights could be visible in Chicago and other parts of the United States thanks to a serious geomagnetic storm.

The Space Weather prediction Center recorded a storm with a force of G4, or severe, Sunday morning. Its effects should last until Monday morning, which means that the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, could be visible as far south as the center of Illinois, plans the center.

In the Chicago region, a clear sky is scheduled for Sunday evening on Monday morning, which makes the lights more likely to be visible.

Monday evening, the probability of being able to see the northern lights in Chicago drops considerably.

The geomagnetic storm comes from an ejection of coronal mass passing on the earth and other geomagnetic activities. The ejection carries loaded atoms, which leads to the visible of the North Enlightenment in the sky, according to the center of spatial meteorological prediction.

The passage of coronal mass ejection is weakening, but solar wind conditions are raised on Sunday, which means that the geomagnetic storm could still be classified as severe.

When a severe geomagnetic storm has an impact on the earth, the northern lights are visible further south, the most serious storms making the lights visible as southern as certain parts of Texas, Mississippi and Alabama.

The intensity of the storm is difficult to predict and fluctuates often, so that people hoping to see the northern lights are encouraged to be patient when they seem to the sky.

Geomagnetic activity can affect GPS systems, electrical networks and certain communication systems, but most have technology to counter interference.
