In a rare moment not scripted during a speech on the continent on Thursday, MA explicitly expressed its point of view on unification for the first time during its four visits to continental China.
“My post is that the two sides of the Strait should continue the peaceful and democratic unification,” said MA, who was the Taiwan chief from 2008 to 2016 and is also the former president of Kuomintang (KMT), friendly on the continent.
His current trip started on June 14 and ends on Friday.
He then clarified that unification should not be carried out by “the use or threat of force” and must “respect the will of the Taiwan people”, according to the report.
