A former league footballer is in prison after being convicted of having raped a drunk woman while she was sleeping.
Oluwasanmi Odelusi, 31, who played for people like Bolton Wanderers, MK Dons and Coventry City before her retirement in 2020, assaulted the 27-year-old woman during her trip to London since the United States in November 2021, learned Snaresbrook Crown Court.
Continuing, Charles Evans said that the victim had been attacked as she was sleeping in bed in an airbnb after meeting Odelusi and a friend during an evening.
Odelusi was found guilty by the jury by ten majority and subsequently released under conditional surety before his sentence in May.
“A sleeping person cannot give their consent. It is as simple as that, said Mr. Evans.
“This is not the case of the crown that the complainant was too intoxicated to consent, but this is the case of the crown that her poisoning certainly contributed to the circumstances where the defendant was able to rape the sleeping complainant.”

Odelusi denied the accusation and insisted that the victim was awake and had consented.
The prosecutor explained to the court how the victim came into contact with Odelusi during clubbing in London in 2021.
“They stayed in an Airbnb apartment with three bedrooms in Shoreditch, in eastern London, and the evening of Friday, November 26, decided to go to a club,” said Evans. “The complainant had a friend in London that she wanted to meet, so they all went to Reign Nightclub in Piccadilly.
“The complainant did not remember the number of photos of Tequila, but said that she had a lot.
“They then went to the Piccadilly club, arriving there some time after midnight. More alcohol was consumed and the complainant felt drunk but not in blackened.
One of the victim’s friends kissed Ryan Sellers, an Odelusi footballer friend. They subsequently invited the two men to their accommodation. The victim said her memory “dropped her a little” due to alcohol consumption and did not remember much of the taxi, but he could clearly remember the rape.
Odelusi had consensual sex with the victim’s friend after being invited to his bed. After a while, she asked him to stop, what he did, the court learned. He then entered the victim’s room and raped her around 6 a.m.
She woke up and realized that someone had sex with her but could not speak. Odelusi returned to the friend’s room as the victim fell forward, the court learned.

Evans said the victim woke up at 11 a.m. and felt confused. She spoke to another rape friend later the same day, the court was informed.
The victim was questioned by metropolitan police in the United States.
Claire Cooper’s defense told court that the victim had shown an interest in Odelusi in the taxi and had shown him his Instagram account and he complimented his photos, but “they were not added”.
She said: “He was shocked and surprised when he was asked to attend the police station.
“He cooperated with the police. He was not proud of him after lying with the two women, but his actions were not someone who was guilty of rape.
