The former boss of Man United, Erik Ten Hag, would have been included on a limited list of candidates to succeed Xabi Alonso as a head coach of Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso confirmed last week that he would leave the German team at the end of the season after almost two and a half years in the role.

The former Real Madrid midfielder is expected to join the Spanish giants in summer, Carlo Ancelotti leaving Los Blancos later this month to become the boss of Brazil.

Leverkusen would have started his search for Alonso’s successor, with ten spells among the names that are being studied, according to The Athletic.

Ten Hag has been without work since he was dismissed as a boss of Man United in October.

The Dutchman was dismissed with the Red Devils in 14th in the Premier League after winning only four of their first 14 games.

His departure came despite the club’s trigger for a one -year contract extension last summer.

The extension of Ten Hag followed him by leading the club to the FA Cup, after also winning the Carabao Cup during its first full season in charge.

The 55 -year -old would want to join a club in the Bundesliga or in the Premier League.

Ten Hag had previously been coach of the second team from Bayern Munich between 2015 and 2017, when Pep Guardiola managed the senior team.

He then appreciated an impressive spell in Utrecht, before leading Ajax to three consecutive Dutch titles and the semi-finals of the 2019 Champions League.

The former Arsenal star, Barcelona and Chelsea Cesc Fabregas was also considered a competitor for Leverkusen work.

Although the German giants would admire Fabregas, the wait is that he will remain with Como, that he led to 10th during their first season at Serie A.

Fabregas is currently under contract with the Italians until 2028, which means that the club would need compensation if Leverkusen poache it.

Leverkusen, however, will not require the compensation of Real Madrid for Alonso, the telegraph reporting the Spaniard has concluded a friendly agreement to leave the club for free.

As a Leverkusen manager, Alonso took care of 139 games, winning 89 – an impressive victory rate of 64%.

In addition to having been elected the coach of the Bundesliga season last year, the Spaniard was also crowned “best coach of the year” by Globe Soccer in 2024.

He left Madrid after winning five trophies and made 236 appearances for the club in five years in 2014, and is one of the Spanish gold medals of exceptional backgrounds, raising two European championships and a World Cup for Roja, playing 114 times.
