The former lift of the Tigers Octavio Dotel, who launched for Detroit in the World Series 2012, died after being trapped for hours in rubble of a collapsed roof in a nightclub in the Dominican Republic.
Dotel, 51, was saved from rubble on Tuesday morning, but died while he was transported to a hospital in the capital of Santo Domingo, the Dominican national police confirmed to journalists, including the Associated Press.
Early Tuesday morning, the roof of the popular nightclub Jet Set collapsed during a merengue concert, killing over 60 years and injuring more than 160, according to a report by the Associated Press. Nelsy Cruz, a local politician and sister of the former major leagues, Nelson Cruz.
Tigers learned Dotel’s death on Tuesday afternoon, as are his many other former ball clubs, many of whom offered condolences on social networks. The Houston Astros said they had “broken heart” and called Dotel one of the best readers in the game when he launched Houston from 2000 to 2004.
Dotel, a right -hander, presented 13 different teams during his 15 -year career in major leagues – a record number of teams for a player, until Edwin Jackson, also a former tiger, presented a 14th different team.
Dotel signed a one -year and $ 3 million contract with the Tigers before the 2012 season, and proved to be effective, with an MPM of 3.57 in 57 appearances during the regular season. He withdrew 62 in 58 rounds. Dotel then made six appearances in the playoffs that year, two on each turn, including the World Series, and did not allow to run.
The option of 3.5 million dollars of Dotel for 2013 was recovered by the Tigers, but he injured his elbow in mid-April and did not launch the rest of the season. It turned out that he never launched in the major leagues again, officially retired in October 2014. He had an MPM of 3.78 out of 758 appearances, mainly outside the enclosure of the lifts.
In addition to tigers and astros, Dotel also launched for New York dishes, which signed him at the age of 19 in the Dominican Republic, and the Oakland A, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Toronto Blue Jays and St. Loules Dodgers.
Dotel was part of a combined boost for Astros in 2003, and he won a world series with the cardinals in 2011.
