The brother of former First Lady Heredia, Ilán Heredia, was also sentenced to 12 years in prison for money laundering in the same case.
The judges of the National Superior Court of Peru concluded that Humala and Heredia had received nearly $ 3 million in illegal contributions for the political campaigns of Odebrecht and the government of the President of Venezuéli, Hugo Chávez (1999-2013).
Humala, a 62 -year -old retired military officer, came to power in 2011 after defeating right politician Keiko Fujimori in the second round.
The trial began in 2022, and alongside Humala and his 48 -year -old wife, the court sentenced eight others. Humala and Heredia were detained in pre -trial detention from 2017 to 2018 at the request of the prosecutor to prevent their flight.
