The former manager of England, Fabio Capello, explained why the three Lions did not end their expectations for a large victory of the tournament under Gareth Southgate.
During her eight years at the helm, Southgate led England to successive finals in euros, but his team failed against Italy and Spain, respectively.
He resigned from his role after losing against Spain in last year’s final, after missing little to deliver the trophy that has escaped in England since 1966.
Capello – who managed England between 2007 and 2012 – praised Southgate for his work with the national team, but believes that they finally lost their biggest games during their mandate because of their “fear of winning”.
“ Southgate did a fantastic job, he arrived twice to play in the final, but they lost the final because when the players of England arrived in the final, they did not play with the same installations and the same security with which they had played before, ”, Capello told Flashscore.
“I was in the match in Wembley when they played Italy and after 20 minutes, they played to waste time because they were afraid to save the final.”
Fabio Capello thinks that a “fear of winning” prevented England from triumphing in a major tournament under Gareth Southgate

Capello has urged the boss of New England Thomas Tuchel to focus on the development of a positive state of mind within his team
Capello seems to be thinking that the best chances of winning England to win a tournament occurred in 2021 when they faced Italy on the lawn at home.
Southgate men took the perfect start by taking the lead in the second minute thanks to Luke Shaw.
However, England had a hard time creating chances of the rest of the match, and Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci brought his team in the middle of the second half to bring the match to the penalties.
Italy then held its nerve during the shooting to triumph 3-2 in the penalties.
Thomas Tuchel has now been responsible for leading England to next year’s World Cup in North America.
Capello knows what it is for a foreign coach to manage England and offered advice to his German counterpart.
He is convinced that Tuchel should focus on the development of a positive state of mind within his team to make the most of his players.
“All the managers who will manage England, you have to understand this thing: you must enter the mind and forget what happened before and think that positively,” he explained.
Tuchel is expected to appoint his first team next week before the eliminations of the England World Cup against Albania and Latvia later this month.
