The first beach volleyball competition will take place this weekend at Lake Chicago – NBC Chicago

The world’s best beach volleyball players are heading to Lake Chicago this weekend for the AVP Gold Series: Chicago Open.

Among the participants in Chicago this weekend are Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes, who are part of Canada’s top team vying for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

South of the border, Chicago’s proximity to a Great Lake and its majestic skyline made one of the contestants feel right at home.

“I love Chicago because it reminds me so much of Toronto. There’s a little parallel here with the beach, the lake, and the beautiful city skyline,” Humana-Paredes told NBC Chicago.

While it’s hard not to get lost in the food and beauty of Chicago, both athletes understand that it’s all business in Oak Street Beach this weekend.

“It’s still an expensive tournament and it’s free. So you’re going to see top volleyball, world-class stuff,” Humana-Paredes said.

The Gold Series Chicago Open wraps up nine recent tournaments that have taken place around the world, but competing in Chicago is simply different.

“It’s one of my favorite cities on the tour. I just like to visit, I also feel very comfortable here,” Wilkerson said.

Those wishing to watch the competition can head to Oak Street Beach Friday through Sunday.
