Jenkintown, Pennsylvania (AP) – The schools were closed and the residents were ordered to manage on Tuesday after a large fire broke out in an installation of an aerospace manufacturer in a city north of Philadelphia, said managers.
The fire broke out at SPS Technologies in Jenkintown around 9:30 p.m. Monday. Witnesses said there was an explosion and that flames could be seen inside the warehouse, the police department of Abington said in a press release. The building was evacuated, all employees were recorded and no injury has been reported.
SPS Technologies is described as a developer, manufacturer and a world supplier of a range of aerospace fixings and precision components.
The school districts of Abington and Jenkintown and all private and parish schools were closed on Tuesday and will remain closed on Wednesday.
The order of the refuge on site was initially in force until the incident was under control because the smoke and the fire particles filter in the region, officials said. But residents and companies in the immediate area near the factory – around 700 people – were invited to evacuate voluntarily late Tuesday afternoon “while the conditions allow” due to concerns concerning the quality of the air.
Hazmat’s crews were monitoring air quality and advised all companies within a radius of 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) to stay closed until further notice.
The service on three regional train lines in southeast Pennsylvania Transportation Authority remained suspended Tuesday afternoon due to the fire.
