The fire that charred nearly 200 acres in the Agua Caliente area of East County is almost under control

Firefighters continued their efforts Saturday to contain a massive wildfire that has blackened 187 acres in arid eastern San Diego County.

The fire broke out for unknown reasons shortly before 12:30 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 28 on the Great Southern Overland Stage Route in Shelter Valley in the Agua Caliente area of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, according to a Cal Fire incident report.

Firefighters remained engaged throughout the night, reinforcing control lines and extinguishing hot spots, and planned a demobilization of excess resources Saturday as fire activity decreased.

“As of Saturday morning, firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to approximately 187 acres and contained the burned area to approximately 95 percent,” Cal Fire Capt. Michael Cornette said. “We hope to have the fire under control by this evening.”

A total of 60 personnel are currently assigned to the fire, including two engines, two hand crews, two water tenders, a bulldozer and 10 unnamed resources.

Two injuries among firefighters and one injury among civilians were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Cal Fire said.
