The final of season 2 of Doctor Who ends with a huge cameo and a shocking introduction as a doctor (spoiler)

Last of Russell T Davies Doctor Who The revival received mixed criticism. While some have quickly succeeded in the long science fiction series with accusations of going “WOKE”, the truth is that the last two seasons to have far from being subtle with their attempts to tackle everything, from the incels to the sexuality of the doctor and the pronouns.

This apart, the audience is declining, and not even a disney + cash injection to give Doctor Who A feeling of big budget was sufficient to increase interest among homologous and new viewers. Now Ncuti Gatwa has left the series after only a few Christmas specials and a total of 16 episodes.

In the final of season 2 of this evening, the fifteenth doctor is again confronted with the prospect of sacrificing himself to save reality (and a young woman called Poppy, who is a part -time and part -time lord). A paradox of time means that he gets a helping hand from the thirteenth doctor of Jodie Whittaker, and the doctor opens the heart of the Tardis and makes him explode with his regeneration energy to save the day.

After going back to earth to say goodbye to Belinda and a restored poppy, the doctor realizes that he can no longer hold back his regeneration and returns to Tardis. There he turns into a woman, and his face is familiar: it is Billie Piper, the actor who played the Rose Tyler company when Davies relaunched for the first time Doctor Who in 2005.

She simply says: “Oh, hello”, while the episode ends. The credits do not present Piper as “the doctor”, something he did for Whittaker and Gatwa. Consequently, he has the impression that there is something more than that to meet the eye, especially since the bidgeneration has somewhat blocked the waters of what regeneration even means.

If Piper is the doctor, however, it is an intriguing decision and which is at least required to make the fans speak. Tonight’s regeneration is the first time that plans to redesign the doctor have not been announced in advance.

A popular theory is that it has something to do with Rose Tyler, like the “bad wolf”, absorbed the energy of the vortex of the heart of the Tardis. The doctor absorbed the energy of Rose and released it in the Tardis, making him regenerate, and it goes without saying that everything that remains of his old companion is the reason why this iteration carries the face of Rose.

Davies clearly has ambitious plans for the place where things go afterwards, but it remains to be seen if this story will continue. A Christmas special is not in progress, and season 3 was not announced by the BBC. This is probably due to the uncertainty surrounding the current agreement of the distribution with Disney + (which should end).

If and when Doctor Who Returns can be with a much lower budget and perhaps even a new creative team. What it means for this cliffhanger remains to be seen, but we do not expect answers in the next spin-off, War between the land and the sea.
