The FDA approves three food colors from natural sources

The US Food and Drug Administration announced today that it granted three new color additive petitions that will expand the color palette available from natural sources for manufacturers to use safe in food.

Produced by the extraction of water from dried flower petals from the butterfly pea plant, this color additive is already approved for use in sports drinks, fruit drinks, fruit and vegetable juices, alcoholic drinks, dairy drinks, ready -to -drink teas, nutritional drinks, gums, candy, ice cream, ice cream and yogurt.   • Calcium phosphate, a white color approved for use in chicken products ready to eat, white candies, cast iron, donut sugar and sugar for coated candies. The petition was deposited by Innophos Inc. de Cranbury, New Jersey.

Under the federal law on food, drugs and cosmetics (chapter VII, article 721), colors additives are subject to FDA approval to determine if they are safe before they are used in food. The FDA determines whether an additive is sure to use by considering the human food exposure projected to the color additive, the additive toxicological data and other relevant information, such as published literature. Once the FDA has approved an additive color petition, any manufacturer can use the coloring for approved uses.
