The family rents home during the masters to pay a mortgage for the year

This week, the biggest golf stars are going down to the small town of Augusta, in Georgia, in pursuit of the famous green jacket awarded to the winners of the Masters tournament.

It is also time for photographer Whitney Boykin and his family to accumulate in their motorhome to give way to the guests who rent their house in the north of Augusta, in South Carolina.

“I am one of the few inhabitants who says that I like the masters’ week. I just want visitors to see how incredible it is here,” Boykin told Business Insider.

Boykin and other inhabitants rent their properties to golfers and visitors directly, on Airbnb or via other platforms. In the city of Augusta alone, the number of rentals increased from 725 in March 2024 to 1,700 in April 2024, data from the Airdna short -term analysis site. The average income of the city’s rentals increased from $ 2,700 in March 2024 to $ 5,300 in April 2024, said Airdna.

While Boykin refused to share exactly how much she wins, she said that it is enough to cover the mortgage payments of the family for a year. This is the seventh year that the family praises their house for the masters.

From April 4, houses similar to those of Boykin listed on Airbnb were available to rent from $ 9,000 per week to $ 28,000 per week.

The house, just above the Georgia state line, has five bedrooms, three complete bathrooms, two half-bathrooms of baths and a large outdoor space designed to be entertained.

The house is a 12 -minute drive from Augusta’s national golf course. But during the masters’ week, traffic increases at around 30 minutes.

Boykin said that she exceeded the Augusta National Golf Club when she led her children to school.

“The rest of the year is just not so serious,” she said.

Boykin said that many residents north of Augusta praise their houses for masters and use money to go on vacation for a week.

Schools in the region generally plan spring holidays to synchronize with the tournament.

“Everyone is looking forward to this because it’s great money,” Boykin told Business Insider.

In the past, Boykin used Airbnb and Vrbo to rent the house. There is even a local rental agency dedicated to the event called the Masters Housing Bureau.

Over the past two years, Boykin’s family has rented his house to a Texas company that brought their employees to the tournament.

Boykin was linked to the company through a local friend.

In January of each year, Boykin began to think about preparing the house for the masters. The family spends about $ 5,000 to prepare it for tenants.

“Once the Christmas lights are taken, it’s time to prepare,” she said.

The preparations include washing the facade pressure, the addition of new landscaping and obtaining the house in a professional depth.

Boykin stores all his seasonal master’s equipment in a section of the attic which is prohibited to the rest of the family.

It keeps accessories, including flags, pillows and golf supplies, the Masters logo has locked itself for most of the year, as well as special sets of white and white sheets for the rooms.

“My children know what sheets are masters. We don’t touch them,” she said.

Customers arrive on Sunday before the start of the tournament and pay an eight -day stay that includes Monday after the final.

Local schools have extended the spring holidays, added Boykin, with children returning to class on Tuesday after the tournament.

Boykin likes to check the house twice during the week to clean and make sure everything is fine.

Boykin said that cleaning visits were more for his peace of mind because they rarely had problems. City visitors for masters often try to maximize their time on the golf course.

“They don’t spend much time with us,” said Boykin. “They take care of our business better than us.”

Other families renting their homes travel, but Boykin’s family stays in a VR for masters’ week.

Boykin’s husband, who works in the automotive industry, was particularly busy in early April.

Boykin’s family stayed in a motorhome for the first time a year when their home was still accidentally registered for rent in July.

The outings rented their house for a basketball tournament for young people called Peach Jam.

Even if the family did not intend to rent their house for any time other than the Masters, Boykin said that her husband thought it was worth it.

He led to Myrtle Beach to recover a VR which he found online so that the family could honor the reservation.

Boykin added that he had told him that it would allow them to take “additional vacation”.
