The new members were younger and more women, which potentially gives the party a new boost among progressive voters. The average age of recent recruits is 29 years, and 53% of them are women, passing the overall demography of the party to an average age of 43 years and a share of members of 42% of women, according to Tagesspiegel.
The left, which has been faced with internal divisions and weak polls in recent years, hopes that this late thrust will result in electoral gains.
Recently, the left resumed traction in the polls, on average 5% – which would be enough to reach the threshold to keep the party in the Bundestag.
But its path remains uncertain. The party is faced with competition from New Populist on the left Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) and must convince voters that he can offer a credible alternative on the national scene.
