Palm Beach, Florida – The owner of the Patriots of New England, Robert Kraft, announced Tuesday that he introduced the former coach Bill Bâlls into the team’s renowned temple as a contributor, officially buried the Acrimonious Departure War Ax to the Rivals New York Jets in 1997.
Kraft told journalists at the NFL annual meeting that he was motivated to do so partly because of the calendar. Kraft will be 84 years old in June, and Parcels, who was a finalist five times for The Honor, was 84 years old in August.
“While we are both in life … I thought it would be great given what he did for the team,” he said about the Mandate of Parcels from 1993 to 1996. “I am sure he would have been elected, but I wanted to accelerate the process so that he could take advantage of the ceremony.”
“I am very honored. I am,” said Parcels at the Boston Globe. “I do not take anything from everything for granted. I was lucky with the giants and the temple of national fame and then this one. It is three of them. It is a rather humiliating thing.”
Kraft, who bought the team in 1994 and made sure that he would remain in New England instead of moving to Saint-Louis, experienced a well-documented fall with plots at the end of his mandate as a head coach who led to a 35-21 defeat against Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl XXXI. Parcels had deplored, among others, that he did not have full control of the staff.
At a segment of the team’s fans’ base, the departure of plots to the Rivaux jets of the AFC East – which had been the rumor and a distraction leading to the loss of the Super Bowl – was a betrayal and then applied to the team of the team’s fame.
Kraft recognized that Tuesday, when he started to announce the plots and said: “(some) people will probably be mistaken against me for what I am going to do.”
But to another segment of the team’s fans’ base, the credibility plots brought to the franchise – with the quarter -Arrière Drew Bledsoe, the choice n ° 1 of the 1993 project – inspired life in the Patriots and helped prepare the field for a dynastic series of success in the 2000s under the former Assistant of Parcels, Bill Belichick.
Those who considered the candidacy of plots through this prism surely welcomed the announcement of Kraft as good news after consecutive seasons of 4-13 which declared on Tuesday “were really, really difficult; the two worst years of our property”.
Not quite as bad as years before the arrival of plots, but close.
“In the early 1990s, the Patriots were in disarray,” Kraft said about 9-39 teams from 1990 to 1992. “But the hiring of Bill Bâlls in 1993, a double champion of the Super Bowl, brought an instant credibility to the franchise.
Parcels was 34-34 as a patriots’ coach, which included two places in the playoffs (1994, 1996) and the same appearance of the Super Bowl.
Tuesday, Kraft referred to the “unforgettable” sequence of seven consecutive victories of the team to close the 1994 season – its first owner as owner – who won a place in the playoffs. Kraft, who had been the holder of the season for decades before buying the team, also noted the two victories in the Patriots’ playoffs during the 1996 season, which were the first in the history of the franchise.
“These are memories that I will never forget and the achievements worthy of this honor,” he said.
Parcels, which won two Super Bowls as a chief coach of the New York Giants (1983-1990) and was also head coach for the Patriots (1993-1996), Jets (1997-1999) and Dallas Cowboys (2003-2006), were induced in Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
As for the temple of the Patriots’ fame, candidates are reduced to three finalists by a committee which includes media members and former players, coaches and executives. Among the three finalists, an enthronement is chosen by a vote of fans.
Parcels was a finalist in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2020 and 2023.
In 2011, he recognized “some national misunderstandings with the property I regret”.
“These things have since been resolved,” said Parcels at the time. “I think that retrospectively, I would have managed things significantly different from what I was doing. I have always been saddened by the fact that I had to go there. In all honesty, I really didn’t want to. I am sure that Bob (Kraft) would say something in this direction. We talked about it.
