The European Parliament by the numbers – POLITICO

Even without war, a cost-of-living crisis, a global pandemic and troubled Green Deal legislation, follow the negotiations of more than 700 lawmakers representing dozens of national parties across seven political groups – much of which takes place behind closed doors closed – is a headache.

POLITICO searched voting records, legislative records and Parliament documents to determine who was behind the European Parliament’s decisions over the past five years. Here’s what we found:

1. It’s good to be king (creator)

The Conservatives and Social Democrats were (and are) the largest groups in Parliament, but no group won more votes than the liberal kingmakers, Renew Europe.

According to POLITICO data, Renew MEPs won 91 percent of the votes they cast. This was narrowly ahead of MEPs from the Socialists & Democrats, who won with almost 90 percent of the votes.

The European People’s Party – the largest group in Parliament – only won a majority in 85 percent of the vote.

Jordan Bardella, leader of the French National Rally, dreams of a “blocking minority” in the next Parliament. POLITICO statistics show why: Lawmakers in his Identity and Democracy group lost 40 percent of the vote.
