This week in Travel News: Makeup videos at 30,000 feet, the “little Marrakech” that none of your friends has been, and a historic European city loses its place.

And it’s the Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off of the busy summer trip season. It also means beach time. “Dr. Beach” has published his list of the 10 best American beaches, and this year’s number 1 is not in Florida or Hawaii.

Bruges problem

When tourists say they want to be able to take a piece of their favorite place with them, they sometimes mean it a little too literally.

The picturesque city of Belgium de Bruges has published a request that tourists stop stealing cobblestones in its medieval streets recognized by UNESCO.

Local politician Franky Demon says that 50 to 70 cobblestones disappear per month – even more during the high season – and it costs 200 euros (around $ 225) per square meter to replace them and repair the damage.

“While some can see this as harmless or eccentric, the consequences are serious,” DEMON told CNN. “The elimination of pavers has a clear security risk for residents and visitors. Missing or loosened stones create risks of trigger, and city workers must frequently be sent to make repairs. ”

Demon said that an “author” apparently took the time to replace a missing stone with a planted flower. “A fanciful gesture, but which underlines a lack of respect for our shared inheritance,” he said.

“We just ask for respect. Walking through Bruges means crossing centuries of history,” said Demon. “These cobblestones are not only pieces of stone – they are part of the soul of our city. We urge visitors to enjoy Bruges, but to leave its beauty intact for others. ”

Like Venice, Barcelona and other historic European cities, Bruges had a hard time facing overchurism.

In 2019, the city voted to reduce the number of cruise ships which would be authorized to dock in the neighboring port of Zeebrugge and ended the tourism promotion campaigns in neighboring destinations like Paris to discourage excursionus.

Visitors from Bruges who want a memory of their holidays – maybe consider a box of Belgian chocolates instead?

One way to avoid overchurism is to go to less anticipated places.

Although Syria is not at the top of the mind for summer holidays, the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad led the country to open up to international visitors.

Turkish Airlines and Qatar Airways have launched roads to Damascus, and Adventure Travel Outfitters is in the country to try to return to the ground floor.

“Now Assad is gone, I am sure that the tourism industry will grow so quickly. And as soon as governments cease to say” not to go to Syria “, tourism will explode,” said local tourism operator Ayoub Alsmadi to CNN Travel.

Morocco, Marrakech is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world, with its souks and mosques on a backdrop of the desert.

But many of the same beautiful characteristics can be found in the Moroccan city in the southwest of Taroudant – a “small Marrakech” without the hordes of tourists.

Located an hour and a half east of Agadir, this city soaked in the sun was founded in the 11th century. Taroudant is a place where you can sip tea in a family restaurant, explore a historic fortress or simply relax in a traditional riad Courtyard House.

And if you are looking for an underwater vacation, you don’t have to go to the big barrier barrier. The Philippine APO Reef Natural Park is the second largest continuous coral reef system in the world.

The reef is located in the Philippine Sea, 140 miles southeast of Manila, and is much less visited than its Australian cousin.

This can change, however, because the government of the Philippines submitted APO Reef for a consideration of UNESCO – which means that this is the ideal moment to go.

Makeup and movements

This is one thing to miss a flight because you are stuck in a long safety line. But Blake McGrath missed his plane for a very different reason – he is a professional dancer and decided to make ballet turns at the airport.

McGrath’s dance video has become viral and also launched a trend of other artists – professional and amateurs – making dances at airports.

He is not the only content creator who starts a trend linked to travel. Beauty influencers bring their GRWM videos (prepare with me) in the sky, transforming their tablet tables into a vanity tables.

But it is not only a question of making up. The air in plane cabins is dry, so some of these tiktkers focus on skin care and moisturizers in the sky.

As several of these influencers point out, you should always wear a sunscreen on planes. Our CNN friends highlighted a site for product magazines and recommendations belonging to CNN, tested the best solar screens.
