European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi said his office launched an administrative investigation into potential misconduct by Georgieva a few days after the Bulgarian media reported apparent ties between the magistrate and an alleged criminal. Invited to comment on the issue, EPPO refused.
Georgieva says that she has undergone pressure in a campaign linked to a highly publicized survey on the ease of expansion of gas storage belonging to the Bulgarian State, Chiren.
She accused Delyan Perevski, deputy for the Bulgarian parliament, of having threatened to prevent him from indicating a former Minister of Energy involved in the Chiren project.
“They threaten me, and successfully. I feel threatened by Peevski. First there was the fire in the family home, in which my mother died,” Georgieva told the Bulgarian BTV television channel.
After the death of his mother in the fire, which is the subject of an investigation as a potential criminal fire, EPPO in recent weeks has provided Georgieva additional protection.
Reacting to BTV declarations, Peevski alleged that Georgieva was lying and called EPP to answer.
The United States and the United Kingdom have sanctioned Peevski to “perpetuate corruption in Bulgaria”.
The Office of the City of the City of Sofia in 2023 launched an anti-corruption control over Georgieva which, according to the capital of local media, has not revealed proof of a crime. An investigation into Georgieva by the Bulgarian Anti-Corruption Commission is underway.
