The equestrian world is stunned by the death of British rider Georgie Campbell at 37 after a fall in a cross-country race, as friends pay tribute to the “supportive mentor, queen and wife”.

Campbell and Global Quest were competing in the CCI4*-S event when the accident occurred on the cross-country course. They came across a log in the water at fence 5b, known as the Symonds & Sampson Splash.

Medical professionals immediately responded to the scene, but Campbell tragically died.

After the devastating news broke, several sports figures and many friends paid tribute to Campbell.

Other figures from the equestrian world also shared heartfelt messages in honor of the 37-year-old, including one which read: “@mrsgeorgiecampbell you were my mentor, my friend, my coach, the one who ‘kicked some ass to get my act together and ride.

“It is with great sadness that I received the dreaded phone call that you were taken from us far too soon and your legacy lives on.”

Another heartbroken person posted a photo of Campbell with the message: “Devastated to hear that Georgie Campbell passed away today in a tragic horse accident.

“Rest in peace Georgie, you have been an inspiration to many runners.”

Other Campbell fans took the time to pay their respects as one touching tribute read: “RIP Georgie. You will be greatly missed in the eventing and equestrian world and I send lots of love to your family, friends and horses.

Meanwhile, some took the time to comment on Campbell’s latest Instagram post, which appeared 14 weeks ago.

“Rest Easy Georgie – you will be greatly missed,” one message of support read, while another said: “Rip Georgie, you were an amazing woman and rider, my love Xx, my thoughts are with you family and friends.”

A statement from Bicton International Horse Trials on Sunday said: “It is with deepest regret that we announce that Georgie Campbell (GBR) suffered a fatal accident while competing in the Bicton International Horse Trials in Devon, England, on Sunday May 26, 2024.

“Medical professionals attended the scene immediately after her fall at fence 5b, but unfortunately she could not be saved.

“The horse, Global Quest, was assessed by veterinarians on site and returned to the stable and is uninjured.

“To respect the family’s privacy during this extremely difficult and sad time, no further details will be shared.”

The Bicton Horse Trials took place at the Bicton Arena in Devon between Thursday 23rd and Sunday 26th May.

A statement was issued earlier Sunday announcing that Campbell and Global Quest had fallen on the course and there would be a delay of approximately an hour.

The CCI4*-S event was later abandoned following news of Campbell’s fatal fall.

Campbell, originally from Kent, was pre-selected for the British junior team before making her five-star debut in 2009. She also appeared in several Nations Cups with Team GB.

She was just two years old when her mother Debbie, a former British endurance rider, taught her to ride in Kent.

Earlier in May, Campbell and Global Quest finished third in the CCI3*-S at the Osberton International Horse Trials.

Global Quest is an 11-year-old horse who has competed with Campbell for several years. The horse moved up to four-star level in 2022, with the pair winning the CCI4*-L de Lignières in France that same year.

Georgie had competed at five star level on other horses, completing both the Badminton Horse Trials and the Burghley Horse Trials.
