In a break with tradition, the dinner of this year’s white house correspondents will not include a featured actor.
The association of the correspondents of the White House, which represents the journalists who cover the White House, including those of NPR, canceled the writer and actor Amber Ruffin, appearance planned during the high -level event.
In a statement sent by email to its members on Saturday, the president of the WHCA, Eugene Daniels
“At that time a consecutive moment for journalism, I want to make sure that the emphasis is not placed on division policy, but entirely on the granting of our colleagues for their exceptional work and their purse and mentorship at the next generation of journalists,” he said.
The decision comes almost two months after Daniels announced the appearance of Ruffin in an email to the members, declaring that the artist was “the ideal for this current political and cultural climate”.
The previous artists include Trevor Noah, Roy Wood Jr. and Colin Jost. The event also took place without an actor in 2019, when the historian Ron Chernow delivered the opening speech.
Ruffin representatives did not immediately respond to a comment request.
The annual White House dinner has been taking place since 1921. The American presidents generally attended it, although President Trump chose not to do so during his first mandate. In 2019, Trump rather organized a political rally in Wisconsin.
We don’t know if Trump will appear this time. In February, the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that she was not planning to attend.
The WHCA has played a long -standing role in the management of the presidential “swimming pool” – the group of journalists who regularly cover the president. At the end of February, the White House announced that it would go around the association and unilaterally manage the swimming pool.
The event has become controversial for the appearance of comfort between the White House and the Media. The demonstrators have organized demonstrations outside the site in recent years, especially during the war in Gaza in 2024 and the drilling of fossil fuels in 2023.
In a press release on the WHCA website after the announcement, Daniels said: “The WHCA will never stop defending full access, complete transparency and the right of the American public to read, listen and look at the White House reports, delivered without fear or favor.”
