The whole report is worth reading, and the section that really attracts my attention concerns how the Black Panther game would have adapted the Nemesis system. Cliffhanger was launched by former developers of Monolith Productions, the spirits behind Middle -earth: Mordor shadow and his suite Shadow of warAnd, according to the Cliffhanger team, was trying to create a new system that extended to the fact that the nemesis system of these games could do.
The Nemesis system of Monolith involved enemies generated in a procedural manner which had unique features (mainly resentments directed towards the protagonist Talion) and who would end up returning for a revenge match. Some would run the battle to come back stronger later in the game. Others may have defeated Talion and were shocked to see later he Beate them again. Enemies would even be promoted among the ranks of the Uruks, which gives the impression that your enemies were not only named fodder to be slaughtered.
It was a completely inventive enemy system, and an extended version of this one seems to be a crazy walk in the Black Panther game of Cliffhanger. According to The Bloomberg Story, the game presented “various playable heroes” in the running for the title of Black Panther, like T’Challa, his sister Shuri, and The favorite stage thief of everyone in 2018 film, Killmonger. They would all oppose an extraterreous invasion Captain Marvel and a series of comic events like Secret invasion.
Skrulls sounds like a perfect adjustment for the Nemesis system; As Bloomberg has reported, Skrull enemies could even pretend to be your allies, throwing a whole new layer of intrigue and immersion in the Nemesis system, already one of the most original ideas seen in contemporary video games. I can only imagine how exciting it would be for one of your allies to tackle you suddenly, revealing themselves as a Skrull leader that you thought you beat for good earlier in the game.
And now because EA does not seem to know what it doesWe will not have the remained nemesis system of Cliffhanger. And, worse, the talented developers behind this system are left in search of work and to wonder what is the next step for them.
