An assistant at the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Bureau pulled and killed a 67-year-old disabled man who pulled his weapon in his backyard and through fences before firing deputies, officials of the law enforcement announced on Monday.
Kenneth Vaughn, who lived in an Orangevale house, a suburb of Sacramento, had pulled his weapon through a neighboring fence in someone else’s pool, according to the sheriff’s office.
The deputies arrived on the block around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and evacuated the nearby residences or asked the neighbors to shelter in place.
Sheriff deputies parked shielded vehicles outside the Vaughn house and were able to get in touch with him, they said, but Vaughn said that he had mobility problems and could not go out. He told the deputies that he was armed with a busy pistol, according to the Sheriff’s office.
He told the deputies that they could help him walk by meeting him at his door, but then, at 7:30 p.m., he closed all the blinds at home, said the sheriff’s office.
Vaughn has repeatedly refused to surrender and has started to threaten to shoot deputies, the agency said.
Around 9:50 p.m., Vaughn shot deputies outside the house, and an assistant returned the fire, hitting Vaughn once in the chest, according to the sheriff’s office.
He died on the scene.
A neighbor who witnessed a large part of the scene but asked not to be identified said that Vaughn was a calm and older man who was visited by guards and especially kept for him.
He would signal the neighbors who passed, but it was on this subject, said the neighbor.
The neighbor listened throughout the evening, while the Sheriff’s deputies spoke of a speaker, asking Vaughn to leave his house safely and go.
After the shooting, the neighbor said that he had spoken to the son of Vaughn and he was told that Vaughn had suffered from drug and alcohol problems. The son told the neighbor that they had been trying for years to bring the police to confiscate the weapons of Vaughn.
“I feel bad because no one here knew how bad he was going,” said the neighbor. “It’s just tragic.”
