Asheville, North Carolina (Wlos) – Buncombe county officials report that a dead aquatic bird in the Julian lake park received a “positive” test result for the avian flu H5N1, commonly known as bird flu.
Officials say that the staff of Lake Julian Park identified eight deceased in the park and that additional results are pending. There is currently no calendar when these results are available.
Despite these results, the park will remain open, but visitors are advised to avoid touching or feeding savage.
Parks and public health personnel of Buncombe County collaborate with state partners, including the Northern Carolina Wildlife Resource Committee, the Division of Public Health and the Ministry of Agriculture to establish Cleaning protocols and monitor and test potential human exposure.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that there have been 67 confirmed human cases of H5 bird flu in the United States since 2024, including a related death. To find out more about avian flu, click here.
