Nuuk, Greenland – Danish Prime Minister Put Frederiksen went to Greenland on Wednesday for a three -day trip aimed at building the confidence of Greenland officials at a time when the Trump administration seeks control of the vast arctic territory.
Prime Minister Put Frederiksen announced his plans for his visit after the American vice-president JD Vance visited an American air base in Greenland last week and accused Denmark of subinvesting on the territory.
Greenland is an island rich in minerals and strategically critical which becomes more accessible due to climate change. Trump said the earthly mass was essential to American security. It is part of North America but is a semi-automobile territory belonging to the kingdom of Denmark.
Frederiksen should meet the new Greenland chief, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, after an election last month which produced a new government. She will also meet the future Naalakkersuisut, the cabinet, during a visit due to Friday.
“It is my deepest respect for how the Greenlanders and politicians from the Groenlander manage the great pressure on Greenland,” she said in a statement announcing the visit.
On the agenda, there are talks with Nielsen of cooperation between Greenland and Denmark.
For years, the inhabitants of Greenland, with a population of approximately 57,000 inhabitants, worked on a possible independence from Denmark.
Threats from the Trump administration to take control of the island in one way or another, perhaps even with military force, have made a lot of anger in Greenland and Denmark. The entering government wants to adopt a slower approach on the issue of possible independence.
The Greenland political group is the nicest to the American president, the Naleraq party which advocates a fast way to independence, has been excluded from coalition talks to form the next government.
Peter Viggo Jakobsen, an associate professor at the Danish Defense Academy, said last week that the Trump administration aspirations for Greenland could turn against him and bring the lightest parts of Denmark closer.
He said that “Trump frightened most Greenlanders far from this idea of a close relationship with the United States because they don’t trust him”.
