The last units of Russian soldiers, deployed by the CSTO together with troops from several other countries, have left Kazakhstan. The peacekeeping operation aimed to bring stability after violence that left more than 200 people dead.

Four planes with Russian soldiers, who were participating with troops from several other countries in a peacekeeping force of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, left Kazakhstan. They took off on January 19 from Almaty and Noursultan airports.

“The peacekeeping operation […] on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan is completed […] The contingent of peacekeeping forces from five countries carried out the assigned missions,” said General Andrei Serdioukov, who commanded this mission deployed by the regional organization. In addition to Russian troops, soldiers from Armenia, Belarus, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan took part in this mission. “I wish the Kazakh people peace and prosperity,” added the general.

The collective peacekeeping forces of the CSTO had been deployed in early January at the request of the Kazakh government to stabilize the situation following unrest that left more than 200 dead in the country following a mobilization against the rise in gas prices. The President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokaïev had evoked an “attempted coup” involving foreign fighters.
