Only a week after its release, the last prequel to “Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins is already a huge success.
“Sunrise on the Reaping” – which follows the experience of Haymitch Abernathy in the 50th Hunger Games – was published on March 18 and has already sold 1.5 million copies.
The novel is full of revelations on the universe of Hunger Games, a large part of which focuses on the Covey family, which was presented in the other “Hunger Games” in Collins. More importantly, he reveals that Katniss Everdeen has a Covey ancestry.

The Covey first appears in “ Ballad of singing birds and snakes ”
Collins released his first “Hunger Games” prequel “, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, in May 2020.
Located 64 years before “The Hunger Games”, the book follows a young snow from Coriolanus while it mentions a tribute for the 10th Hunger Games. He is assigned to the Victor woman of the District 12, Lucy Gray Baird.
After harvesting the Games and led to the Capitol, Lucy Gray explains to a journalist that she is from the Covey family and is not from the District 12.

“My people are Covey. Musicians by trade. We just took a bad turn one day and we were forced to stay,” said Lucy Gray. She explained that they came from “no district in particular” and used to “go from one place to another” playing music before the soldiers of peace forced them to stay in the District 12 after the first rebellion.
At the beginning of “the ballad of singing birds and snakes”, there are six living members of the Covey family living in the District 12: Billy Taupe Clade, the clerk Carmine Clade, Tam Amber, Maude Ivory Baird, Barb Azure Baird and Lucy Gray Baird.
Billy Taupe and the Carmine clerk are brothers, and Maude Ivory, Barb Azure and Lucy Gray are cousins. Tam Amber is not linked to the rest of Covey by blood, but the group is treated mutually as a family found.
At the end of the book, only four members of Covey are left in the district 12. Billy Taupe is assassinated, and Lucy Gray is killed by Coriolanus or disappears in the woods while she runs away, to never be heard in Panem again.
The Covey mixed in the District 12 in “ Sunrise on the Harvest ”
When Collins brings readers back to District 12 in “Sunrise On The Reaging”, Covey has still assimilated in the District 12 during the 24 years which followed the events of “the ballad of singing birds and snakes”.
Tam Amber and the Carmine clerk still live in the district, and they raise their niece, Lenore Dove Baird. Lenore is Haymitch’s girlfriend, and Haymitch says in the text that her mother died by giving her birth.
One of the three Covey girls could be the mother of Lenore Dove, but she is probably Maude Ivory for several reasons. More importantly, at the end of the book, Haymitch sees Graves for Lucy Gray and Maude Ivory when he visits the place of rest of Lenore Dove.

In “Sunrise on the Reaping”, Lenore Dove is about 16 years old, she would therefore be born about eight years after the Hunger Games of Lucy Gray. Even if she survived her last meeting with Coriolanus at the end of “the ballad of singing birds and snakes”, it is unlikely that Lucy Gray was in the district 12 when Lenore came to the world, because she would have fled to live her days in the security desert.
The grave of Lucy Gray is also described as “a moussue stone slab”, while Maude Ivory is “a creamy white stone”, which means that Maude Ivory seems slightly more recent.
Readers can deduce from the age of Lenore Dove and the chronology that the Graves suggest that Maude Ivory was the mother of Lenore Dove, not Lucy Gray.
Katniss is a Covey descendant
In “Sunrise on the Reaging”, Haymitch says he meets Lenore Dove through his friend Burdock Everdeen, Katniss’s father.
“She was not one of the cousins of Everdeen in Burdock, but I knew that he had distant from it on the side of his mastery,” said Haymitch about Burdock’s ancestry.
Due to Muade Ivory and the fate of Lucy Gray, Burdock’s mother seems to be Barb Azure Baird. Barb Azure would then be the grandmother of Katniss, making her a distant parent of Lucy Gray and Lenore Dove.

Collins laid the basics of the similarity between Katniss and the Covey girls through “The Hunger Games”.
She has a rebellious spirit like her ancestors, and Katniss and her father are described as having beautiful singing voices throughout the series. Haymitch strengthens singing like a trait’s bridge inherited from Covey in “Sunrise on the Reaging”. He describes Burdock as having a “remarkable voice”. A few pages later, he says that Lenore Dove loves music: “Like all Covey, music in his blood.”
Later, at the funeral of Haymitch’s mother and brother, the Bardane sings “The Old Therefore”, a song Lucy Gray sings when she thinks she is about to die in the games. Music, especially Covey music, is also in Burdock’s blood.
Covey also inadvertently gives
The token mockingjay that Katniss carries in his first hunger games becomes an important symbol in the entire Collins series.
The bird represents that the Capitol cannot control everything, because it results from the mating of the Capitol Jabberjays and the mockery birds born naturally. Katniss embodies this spirit when she directs the rebellion against President Coriolanus Snow and his government, using the Mockingjay symbol to help others to act.

Katniss’s friend, Madge Undere, gives her the spit to wear after she volunteers in tribute to the District 12. In “Catching Fire”, told Katniss that the pin was originally belonging to his aunt, Maysilee Don, who competed alongside Haymitch for the District 12 during the 50th games of Hunger.
In “Sunrise on the Reaping”, Haymitch reveals that Tam Amber has forged him originally. Maysilee never worn hers, telling Tam Amber that Mockingjays was “old ugly things” of Lenore Dove’s anger.
Haymitch explains the mythology surrounding Mockingjays in Maysilee while they are in the arena, giving it a new perspective on them. She says she will give another test to the pin if she survives the games. Maysilee never has the opportunity to wear the spindle, but a Covey girl made, making the moment complete.
