The Comtée de Marin supervisor will vote on March 11 on the advisability of declaring a three -year “refuge crisis”, the county officials announced.
Officials explained that a refuge crisis would allow expanded emergency shelter options, including temporary cabins and recreational vehicles.
If it is approved, the designation would facilitate zoning and allow restrictions for shelters on the properties belonging to the county, allowing a faster deployment of temporary housing solutions, officials said.
No funding is attached to the proposal, which applies only to areas not constituted in society.
In order for this plan to work, the board of directors must update the building codes for emergency shelters under Californian law, officials said.
Currently, the rules of the county require permanent foundations, which makes it more difficult to configure and delete temporary housing.
“This refuge crisis designation provides us with another tool to help those who live in the street or in a vehicle,” said Gary Naja-diese, director of the homeless and coordinated County care.
