Alexis Ohanian, the co -founder of Reddit, joins an offer to buy Tiktok from its Chinese owner.
“I am officially one of the people who try to buy Tiktok to us – and I bring it. Tiktok has changed the situation for the creators, and its future should be built by them,” wrote Ohanian on X Tuesday.
On Monday, the businessman and former owner of Los Angeles Dodgers, Frank McCourt, said that Ohanian would join his buyers consortium, “popular offer”.
The consortium, which includes the star of “Shark Tank”, Kevin O’Leary, submitted an offer to Tiktok in early January. The group said their proposal would give users of American Tiktok “the possibility of controlling, protecting and benefiting from their data”.
The group said in a statement announcing Ohanian’s participation on Monday that they would rethink Tiktok around a blockchain technology.
“Users should have their data. Creators should have their audience. Period,” Ohanian wrote in his X Post on Tuesday.
“We are establishing a new standard for digital communities. A tiktok for people, by people. See if we can succeed,” added Ohanian.
Ohanian co -founded Reddit with his roommate, Steve Huffman, in 2005. They sold Reddit to Condé Nast in 2006, but Ohanian returned as executive president in 2014.
Ohanian, who is married to the tennis superstar Serena Williams, left the board of directors of Reddit in 2020.
Tiktok’s future in the United States is not yet clear. Under the disinvestment or bank law adopted by the Senate in April, the company was forced to stop operating in the United States on January 19 unless it breaks from its Chinese owner, Bytedance.
Tiktok briefly became dark for American users on January 18, but resumed his services on January 19 after President Donald Trump said he would sign an executive decree to stop the prohibition. On January 20, Trump signed a prescription for suspension of the prohibition for 75 days.
Since then, Trump has launched several ways to save Tiktok, in particular by having half of the United States or a sale to technological billionaires like Elon Musk and Larry Ellison.
The representatives of Ohanian and Tiktok did not respond to requests for comments from Business Insider.
