Before augmented reality was never one thing, there was Google Glass: a very publicized experience which was ultimately a failure in relation to problems like privacy (and just resembling a Dork). During an E / O session yesterday with the CEO of Deepmind Demis Hassabis, the co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin, admitted that he had made “errors” with Google Glass in several areas.
“I simply knew nothing about the chains of mainstream electronic supply chains, really, and how difficult it would be to build this and have it at a reasonable price and manage all the manufacturing and so on,” he said during the session.
Brin said he always believed in the form factor, adding that the last XREAL device looks like “normal glasses” without “this thing in front”. He noted that rather than doing it alone as before, Google now has “big partners” in Samsung (the Moohan project helmet) and Xreal (Project will have Glories) as part of the Android XR extended reality program.
There was also a “technological gap” when Google Glass arrived in 2013 which no longer exists, according to Brin. “Now in the AI world, the things that these glasses can do to help you without constantly distracting you, this capacity is much higher,” he said
Google Glass was not a full flop. It is easy to forget that the product has requested for many years after its beginnings, largely as a corporate appearance, and was not entirely interrupted in 2023. It also opened a path for future virtual and AR reality clothes like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Meta Quest and Apple Vision Pro. Come and think about it, however, none of these projects have poured fire either.
